With a full house to watch the final game, the supporters
were to see the best game of the season.
Ilkeston Outlaws went into their final game of the
season looking to finish off with a win against the Wirral Hornets who
were looking to win and secure a place in the League playoffs.
Outlaws had a full team available for the game and
set about to put right the defeat to Wirral earlier in the year. They started
well with Martyn Blankley leading the way offensively and quickly went
into an 11 – 4 lead forcing Wirral to call the Timeout, but they could not make
any headway into the Outlaws lead, which they would hold onto and stretch
out as the game progressed.
The first quarter was all Outlaws as they ran out to
a 20 – 9 lead, into the second quarter which was a much closer contest between
the two teams but with Hector Garcia and Vytautus Liutkus working
hard Outlaws went in at half time leading 34 – 21.
The second half was to produce a much more physical game
and point scoring as both teams looked for the inspiration needed to win the
game and with Sean Dilks, Jamie Grainger and Ben Hallam working
effortless to score offensively and with Lee English, Tony Palmer, George
Mullins, Junior Menakaya, Gregg Emmerson and Sam Gray working hard to stop
the threat defensively there was only ever going to be one winner.
Fouls continued to mount into the second half forcing both
teams to try other things to secure the win that was so much wanted by both
sides. Outlaws were too much ahead for Wirral to come back and ran out to
win the game 93 – 66 which is the biggest result of the season for the
Outlaws.
